VPSN Virtual Production Showcase – Extended Reality

A Showcase of Virtual Production

“Amidst a barren wasteland, a lone survivor, once a game student, rediscovers hope at their alma mater, Breda University of Applied Sciences, where a cryptic message leads them to unlock a virtual reality portal, bridging the gap between a desolate present and a hopeful future.”

This captivating narrative forms the backbone of a longer short film produced under the Virtual Production Studio Network (VPSN) Project!

Produced by students at the Breda University of Applied Sciences and spearheaded by their CRADLE team, this film is a testament to the possibilities of Virtual Production even on the small scale.

Tasked with showcasing Virtual Production technology, the students delivered a compelling and visually stunning piece that highlights their creativity and technical skills.

From Animation to Real-Life Action – Show It, Don’t Tell

Initially, the VPSN project intended to utilize animated media to explain the technology.

Together, we instead chose to truly bring virtual production into the spotlight through real-life action to better showcase the capabilities of virtual production. Animated media has its strengths, especially in informational communication and explainers, but with the partners’ ambition and extensive experience in filmmaking, they saw an opportunity to “show it, don’t tell.”

Scriptwriters from Breda University of Applied Science crafted the story, and students already learning about Virtual Production were recruited to join the entire process. The Animation Workshop and IPCA (our other two partnering organizations) helped frame the overall story and refine the corporate message about “what is VPSN” and “what is virtual production, and were available as sparring partners through the entire process, acting as clients to give the students a full-on production experience. This collaboration provided the writers with ideas and allowed for iterative development with the student team.

After weeks of pre-production, the student team showed incredible enthusiasm, passion, and dedication and were quick to show initiative and technical understanding to go into production with little supervision. Their proactive approach and hard work resulted in a final product that exceeded expectations, indeed demonstrating the power and potential of virtual production technology.

The Unveiling:

Without further ado, we present ‘Extended Reality’, a meticulously crafted video utilizing all processes of filmmaking skills within virtual production from client pitch, pre-production, production, iterations, and post-production.

The student team encompassed the skills we’ve envisioned any student following the VPSN teachings can reach, and exceeding expectations, the team behind ‘Extended Reality’ delivered beyond what was expected.

Congratulations, and immense gratitude to the team!
